Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that have a simple structure. They have a cell wall that provides protection and shape, a plasma membrane that regulates the flow of materials in and out of the cell, cytoplasm where metabolic reactions occur, and genetic material in the form of DNA. Some bacteria also have a capsule, flagella for movement, and pili for attachment to surfaces.
