Libya was colonized by several different powers throughout history.

During ancient times, Libya was colonized by the Greeks, who established several colonies along the Libyan coast, including Cyrene, which became a major center of Hellenic civilization in North Africa.

In modern times, Libya was colonized by Italy in 1911, and it remained under Italian control until 1943, when the Allies defeated Italian forces during World War II. During the Italian colonial period, Libya was subjected to harsh treatment, including forced labor, land expropriation, and other forms of oppression.

After World War II, Libya gained its independence in 1951, but it remained a monarchy until a military coup in 1969 led by Muammar Gaddafi, who ruled the country as a dictator until 2011. Following the Libyan Civil War, which began in 2011, Gaddafi was ousted and killed, and a transitional government was established.
