Gondwana was a large landmass, often referred to as a supercontinent, that formed during the late Neoproterozoic (about 550 million years ago) and began to break up during the Jurassic period (about 180 million years ago). ¹² It incorporated present-day South America, Africa, Arabia, Madagascar, India, Australia, and Antarctica. ² It was named by the Austrian scientist Eduard Suess, after the region in central India of the same name. ¹.
